Scraps Disease

Being an avid crafter and quilter I do suffer from a number of ailments including compulsive fabric purchasing (which I might add is currently in remission YAY !), Chronic Hoarding and the inability to throw away scraps, selvedges etc.  I know that a lot of you will understand my ailments.

Do you keep all of your scraps in an ever growing scrap bin?  I have tried to cure myself by using up my selvedges and by cutting my scraps into useable squares and binning the rest.

I have this 2 1/2" square bin on my cutting table.

Now I make myself cut odd pieces of fabric as soon as I have finished with them.

The 2 1/2" squares go into my tin and the off cuts go into the bin.

I have also begun to sew together all of my selvedges to make little lavender sachets.  Simply sew them together and then cut 2 rectangles or squares the same size.  sew 1/4" from the raw edge around 3 sides.  Fill with lavender and then sew across the top.

Then clip along the edges with the pinking shears.  How easy is that ?

Thankfully now I think I am on the road to recovery.

Hugs - Fee x

Hello Fee... I am terrible at throwing away scraps too... I would like to be as organised as you in cutting them up at the time. I do also keep the selvages ... love the idea of the lavender sachets.. I have done quite a few pincushions and bookmarks with mine...

I have made colour co-ordinated scrap tubs from my scraps and have them handy on my cutting table. Makes it so much easier to use them when they are just there :o) I am still waiting for the perfect project for my selvages though, hugs

The sachets are so pretty. how did you sew the individual strips together? They don't look like you sewed each strip right sides together before you made the squares.

What good ideas you have, especially cutting the scraps into two and a half inch squares.
I keep a tub of fabric scraps in the sewing loft - they're even sorted into colours.

Hi Fee, I love your lavender sachet idea. I have lots of selvedge pieces and this is a great way to use them. Most of my scraps are in tubs with different size pieces in them. Hugs....

Your post made me smile, since I just this week got a bigger container for the scraps. LOL I do cut 2.5 squares and also strips, but there are still a lot of other pieces. I haven't saved selvedges, and I'm resisting that pull, but the little scrappy pieces which I sew into blocks (that I call beepies - b p for bits and pieces!) would make wonderful sachets! Thanks for sharing the idea.

Fee, this looks like a great idea! And a friend just gave me a big bag of lavender, so I will be making some up very soon. I'll put pictures on my blog, probably not till after Christmas, though, when I give them away. Thanks for sharing.

I am not a selvedge saver, but I do save other scraps in different containers. All the little left over bits and pieces go into a plastic bag and my grandies take them to Day Care and Pre-school to glue on to paper and things, nothing is wasted. Cheers.

I don't really like throwing " useful" things" away scraps can always be used
