New Clothes, Baking & Friendship

Thanks so much for all of your lovely comments on my last post.  Living in such a beautiful place as Tasmania does have a slight downside and that is the cold dark days of winter.  For those of you that asked I do take a Vitamin D supplement but sometimes it is just not enough.

To cheer myself up and get me going with my blog again I have given it some new clothes and a new banner above.  If you read my blog in reader then you won't see the changes unless you pop over.

I use the free graphics over at "Free Pretty Things" - the link is on my sidebar on the right hand side - You have to see the Free Vintage Clipart she has - It's gorgeous.

Yesterday I decided to make a quiche for lunch and as I had no ready made pastry in the freezer I set about making my own.

I used my great grandmother's rolling pin which is one of my kitchen treasures

Into the oven it went and half an hour later

We had a lovely family sized quiche

It tasted delicious but unfortunately it was made from store bought eggs as my girls are having a little break from laying at the moment.

I then baked an orange poppyseed cake for afternoon tea

I couldn't get motivated to get into the sewing room until the late afternoon and then I think the only attraction was the single ray of winter sunshine that came through the window for a few minutes.

It's amazing how close friends know just the right time to call.  Dawn and I were on the phone having our usual natter and she was sewing granny squares.  We decided that an over the phone sew along would be the go to get me motivated

So I took my newly acquired Vintage Modern Jelly Roll and some white quilters homespun and set about cutting the fabric needed for 20 X granny squares.  It took less than half a jelly roll so I was pretty pleased with that.  The cutting took 20 minutes and all the time Dawn and I nattered and did the math together.

I sorted my squares into colour groups and then chose the squares for my first granny square.

And here is the end result - My first granny square.  I am not sure if my motivation will extend to anymore of these today but I am hoping so.  Dawn and I took a photo of the block that we sewed together (Hers is from Strawberry Fields by Fig Tree Quilts and is delicious !) Then we texted the photos to each other so we could see the other's work.

It was a long distance sew along from Brighton in Tassie to Surrey Downs in South Australia but it was just the boost I needed.  Thanks Dawn - Love ya !!

Hugs - Fee XX

I love the new "tweeks" on your blog. Always so bright and pretty. I have never made my own pastry, it scares me too much! Maybe it's because I dont have such a kitchen treasure like you do :o) You Quiche does look yum and what a lovely idea for you and Dawn to sew together. I just love Granny squares and your blocks will be stunning in Vitage Modern. Enjoy your sunday. Hugs, Sharon

What a lovely idea and what a wonderful friend. A phone-along-sew-along sounds such fun and the resulting granny square looks gorgeous. Hoping the rest of your weekend is wonderful and a bit of sunshine would be a huge help. (no sunshine here today to send you though).
Love your fresh new look.

New Pretty Blog, just the thing Fiona, to give you a lift, as well as your phone - along with Dawn, such a wonderful friend. I always think of Spring and Summer when the winter days are so bleak and the gardens look so bare of colour. Hope you are feeling much better. Cheers Pat.

Fee your blog looks wonderful - so so pretty!! You're tempting me to give it a go, my blog is so plain. The quiche looks good, I haven't made one of those in years.

How fun to sew together long distance...my favorite time to sew is while I'm chatting with a friend. Your granny square is beautiful, hon!

Hi Fee...I hope you feel better in yourself soon. I take something stronger for my 'low' problem and I totally understand how you are feeling. What a great friend Dawn is. Being creative is a hard thing to do when we aren't in that creative space in our heads. z
I love your block.. the colours are just gorg and I love your new additions.
Take care of yourself

Love the new layout on your blog. I think I have that fabric somewhere in my stash! Top tip for those horrible dark winter days: Try going to a tanning salon! Not for the colour, just for the heat and light. Trust me, it works. You don't have to go for weeks on end, but just every now and again. Hope you feel better soon!

Your new blog looks really nice, Fee. It is smmuer HOT here but I have the worst time getting motivated in the winter months. You were very productive and will inspire me when it gets cold outside.

I love the idea of the phone-a-long sew-a-long and a great result!
No frozen pastry? - off to the shop for me - never really tried pastry - definitely in the "I cant be bothered basket"

Fee, your quiche looks so yummy! Makes me want to run into my kitchen and make one. I also love your granny square! I posted on Dawns page also, that I have some charm packs that I haven't quite decided what to do with and after seeing both of your granny squares, I think this is it! Thanks for the inspiration. I would love to have someone call and sew with me over the phone! What a blessing! Hugs!
